The Pentagon, headquarters for the United States Department of Defense, offers the opportunity to take guided tours of the building and learn about the different branches of the military. Outside the building lies the 9/11 Memorial, consisting of 184 illuminated benches, each engraved with the name of a victim who lost their life in the attack. Arlington National Cemetery is located here as well, spanning 624 acres with over 400,000 graves of brave soldiers dating as far back as the Civil War. Within the cemetery lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which has been continuously guarded since 1937 and is dedicated to all unnamed soldiers lost in battle. Those looking to spend time in the great outdoors can attend any number of the lush parks in the city for a lovely picnic. Walking, running, or biking the 18-mile multi-use Mount Vernon Trail is a popular pastime amongst residents, which winds alongside the Potomac River with unparalleled views of the Washington D.C. skyline and leads directly into the picturesque 88-acre Theodore Roosevelt Island. For lovers of the arts, the Arlington Festival of the Arts is an absolute blast to attend.
